Nita Brown makes alterations on Debora McDell-Hernandez's jacket during rehearsal on October 6, 2018 at the Midtown Athletic Club, Rochester, NY. The theme for the runway is the "mash-up" consisting of Nita's design combined with everyday clothes to make casual, corporate and elegant styles.
Nita Brown, the owner and designer for MansaWear is originally from Ghana and based her company in Park Ave. Rochester, New York after working for Kodak. Growing up, Nita was always surrounded by fabrics, tailors and fabric makers: “I think I started everything because of my mother, we would always make our clothes.” When she moved to Rochester she struggled to find a building for her store. She joined a running club and while on a run came across the Park Ave. building that is still her store today, “I needed to put my store a place where people walk so they can see it.” Her production process takes place in Ghana, as her seamstresses and fabrics are located and manufactured there. Nita sends measurements, fabric type, style guides and video details on how the garment should be created, it is then made in Ghana and sent to the store for custom clothing for each customer. Nita started participating in Fashion Week of Rochester as a table selling and promoting her company. She then moved to the runway where she prepares new styles every year to best promote her unique style.

Nita makes wraps out of left over fabric. "I do not think fabric should go to waste, it all has a purpose."

Nita and her team, Gloria and Alana, make last minute alterations on all of the garments for Fashion Week. "I have the clothes all made in my size, all of the ones in the store are my size and for Fashion Week we temporarily take them in to fit the models."

Nita coaches her model, Nnenne David (right) during rehearsals. "The set up is so different this year there is a lot more space we need to work with it, get the clothes up there for as long as possible" Nita says. When Nita first joined Fashion Week of Rochester she set up a table to test the popularity of her clothes. "In 2006 I couldn't get the production right so I had to rethink my business plan."
